I’ve come to see grief as a spiritual path and to believe it’s possible to channel the emotions unleashed by loss into a new–and joyful– wholeness.

In “Kintsugi”, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, gold lacquer is used for mending a shattered vessel, rendering it lovelier than in its original form–and absolutely unique. Like gold lacquer, grief can lead each of us to embrace life more deeply, with a deeper awareness that we are, to paraphrase the French theologian, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, spiritual beings on an earthly journey
